February 28th marks the beginning of the 2022 boys baseball season. Tryouts begin early in the morning on Monday and go on through Friday. Final cuts will occur on Saturday of that week.

“Tryouts are set up in the format of multiple groups. Coaches will watch different groups and different groups will do different things. For example, one group might throw while one might hit and so on. During tryouts we scrimmage the other groups as well, Jacob Manning, junior, said.

Although the season officially begins this upcoming Monday, the boys have been preparing for months.

“Since November the upperclassmen have been hitting in the mezzanine before school two days a week. After winter break all baseball players started meeting Monday through Thursday to hit and throw before school. We prepare our arms by throwing so they won’t get as sore during the season and start hitting to help ‘shake off the rust’ since some may have not hit for a while,” Manning said.

Both coaches and players understand the importance of starting season preparations early. Once the season starts, it gets going fast. The boys first event of the season is a jamboree against Lee’s Summit High School on March 12th.

“We play one of the toughest schedules of anyone in the area.  We play some of the best teams on both the Kansas and Missouri sides of the Metro as well as the best teams from the southwest of the state,” Michael Westacott, head coach, said.
